When I saw him, I was sitting outside on the porch swing
A million miles an hour, too fast to notice anything
His bicycle tires left marks on the grass
And the bag on his shoulder flew behind him as he passed
Alex was essentially his own private post
He delivered for whoever could pay him the most
Today it was a special delivery on Dalton Street
A pretty long ride, but at least he'd have food to eat
The message is the medium, the medium's the letter
The message gets bigger, the pay gets better
Neither rain, nor snow, nor dark of night
Will get you through to the receiver if the message isn't right
As he sat at the intersection in the Back Bay
He considered the package he was carrying today
A labyrinth of duct tape, wrapped up in twine
Alex knew where he was going but he didn't know why
He rode up to the Hilton! He took the elevator
All the way up to the roof where he'd been told that he should wait for her
And as he stepped out, wondering who his client could be
He heard a voice behind him say:
"I think that's for me"
She had long red hair
And a calm disposition
A look on her face
That said: "Look, I'm on a mission"
A silver-striped tie
Under her jacket and vest
And a revolver pointed
Directly at Alex's chest
The message is the medium, the medium's the letter
The message gets bigger, the pay gets better
Neither rain, nor snow, nor dark of night
Will get you through to the receiver if the message isn't right
Alex woke up on the roof of the Hilton
He struggled to stand and his legs started wiltin'
He'd survived the encounter but was still pretty shaken
The package was safe, but not the money he'd been makin'
He rode down to the first floor, pushed through the front door
"You're just what we've been looking for!"
Said a man from the window of an unmarked bus:
"Would you carry letters for the noble among us?"
Alex considered this new course of action
Most of his packages never carried satisfaction
And wouldn't it be nice: messages of priority
For this strange band of travelers protecting our security
And vigilante justice wasn't Alex's thing
But under the circumstances it had a nice ring
So he got onto the bus, drove over the river
A courier lives for the right message to deliver
The message is the medium, the medium's the letter
The message gets bigger, the pay gets better
Neither rain, nor snow, nor dark of night
Will get you through to the receiver if the message isn't right
The message is the medium, the medium's the letter
The message gets bigger, the pay gets better
Neither rain, nor snow, nor dark of night
Will get you through to the receiver if the message isn't right
